01 / Context

A vital coastal connection.

The West New Britain Highway design covered 40 kilometres between Novau and Bamus Bridge in Papua New Guinea. The brief was to upgrade the existing route to a sealed, two-lane road and incorporate a new bridge. Working within the existing road reserve required the design to respond carefully to coastal terrain and local water flows. For a regional road, good design must balance the needs of road users with the realities of construction and maintenance. A solution that is difficult to build or maintain can place a lasting burden on the asset owner. The challenge was therefore to develop a practical upgrade that supported dependable access while making sensible use of the available corridor.

02 / Response

Engineering around the site.

The engineering design drew on survey, geotechnical and traffic information. Road pavements, bridge design, signs and line marking were coordinated with the site’s topography and hydrology. The documentation addressed PNG Department of Works requirements, including its Road Design Manual and Road and Bridge Specifications. Coordinating these elements helps make the relationship between the design and site conditions clearer for the delivery team. It also gives the client a basis for reviewing trade-offs before they become construction issues. The approach considered durability and future maintenance alongside the immediate requirements of the upgrade.

03 / Outcome

A foundation for delivery.

The completed design package included engineering drawings, a digital road and bridge model, a Bill of Quantities and a design report. Together, these defined the proposed works and supported the next stage of delivery. This case study records design completion, rather than claiming that construction of the highway upgrade is complete. For the client, a coordinated package provides a common reference for scope, quantities and technical requirements. It can support clearer pricing, construction planning and assessment of proposed changes. The wider objective is safer, more reliable travel and better access to goods and services for communities along the route.
