01 / Challenge

A local centre for a growing neighbourhood.

For Capital Estate Developments, Denman Local Centre needed to serve the everyday needs of a growing neighbourhood in Canberra’s Molonglo Valley. Shops, services and homes brought different journeys into the same setting, making the connections between pedestrian areas, parking, street frontages and building entrances an important part of the brief. The landscape design needed to support pedestrian movement and mobility while considering existing trees and security requirements. Places to pause belonged within that thinking, alongside the routes people would use to reach their destinations.

02 / Response

Designed around everyday movement.

Movement, tree protection, seating and security were considered as related parts of the landscape. The design considered how pedestrian routes and changes in level connected the centre’s different spaces, with attention to both moving through the setting and stopping along the way. Tree protection was a design priority as the layout was resolved. Protective elements, including bollards, were considered alongside pedestrian routes and clearances, bringing security requirements into the wider arrangement of the outdoor space.

Custom furniture formed part of this landscape response. The furniture suite developed the landscape concept into practical seating. Curved panels created the benches’ changing forms. A coordinated material palette gave these practical elements a consistent character within the centre.

03 / Outcome

A distinctive place to pause.

The custom furniture suite received a 2020 Good Design Award in the Furniture and Lighting category. The award recognises this specific component of the landscape, whose curved seating gives the centre a distinctive place to pause. The broader landscape approach brought pedestrian movement, existing trees and protective elements into a shared design framework for the local centre. Its emphasis was the everyday experience of reaching a shop, moving between services or finding somewhere to sit.
