01 / Challenge
Challenge
Casey needed room for recreation that would grow with its community. The suburb already had playgrounds for younger children, but consultation highlighted demand for nature play, accessible activities, informal sport and somewhere for teenagers to spend time outdoors.
The open space between Yeend Avenue and Plimsoll Drive offered an established landscape rather than an empty site. Mature native trees, younger regeneration and drainage lines connected it to the wider network of green corridors. The task was to introduce a useful range of activities while keeping the character and ecological value of that setting.

Response
Redbox Design Group’s landscape design brought active play, informal sport and family facilities together within the site’s existing clearings. Reviewing nearby playgrounds helped shape a complementary mix of activities, with particular attention to older children and opportunities for different generations to use the park together.
The landscape plan placed an irrigated kickabout lawn alongside a multi-purpose court, cricket net and play spaces. Paths connected the recreation areas with surrounding streets, while picnic shelters, seating, barbecues and a public restroom supported a longer visit. Access to play informed the choice of surfaces and equipment, rather than stopping at the park entrance.
Tree retention guided the arrangement of these spaces. The design worked with established groups of trees and allowed for younger growth, retaining fallen timber where appropriate for habitat. Native planting and treatments to the drainage lines formed part of the landscape response, alongside new trees selected with summer shade and winter sun in mind.

03 / Outcome
Outcome
Completed in July 2024, Casey Community Recreation Park brings nature play, a flying fox, court sports and open grass into one neighbourhood setting. Accessible play equipment, picnic facilities and a public restroom give the park a practical foundation for visits across different ages and abilities.
The project makes a wider range of recreation available within Casey while working with the landscape that was already there. Its value lies in that combination: space for energetic play, room to sit together and a setting still defined by trees.
